Have you ever found a resource that catches your eye? You try it- your’e instantly hooked! You wonder how you taught without it? Well, Vooks did that for me, and they’re running an amazing promo right now where you can try it too!
Vooks is a new streaming service offering better screen time for kids with animated storybooks. Currently Vooks has a Teacher Appreciation Gift is offering a FREE subscription to Vooks for teachers and homeschool educators. It’s their way of celebrating all of our hard work as teachers! I think you and your students will benefit a lot from this learning tool. Let me tell you why I like Vooks:
VOOKS IN MY CLASSROOM
Having access to a large selection of books can be challenging for many teachers. To have an ever expanding collection of books right at my fingerprints has been a dream come true! Having taught grades 1st through 5th, I can say with confidence that Vooks has something special to offer every reader! With a focus on the development of literacy, focus, and imagination, Vooks takes readers on a one-of-a-kind journey where they feel as though they are part of the book! The slow-paced animation takes characters and illustrations and lifts them right off the pages!
I especially love that words are highlighted as they are being read. This helps readers build their ability to track words while reading. Tracking words aids a child’s ability to process letters correctly. It strengthens their focus, which allows them to notice the correct order of the letters in a word. This builds their phonological awareness (the ability to hear the sounds a word makes). The level of engagement students have while interacting with Vooks is top notch!
Another feature of Vooks is its great mix of both new and classic books. From classics like “Where the Wild Things Are” to “Do Unto Otters,” you can find just the right book to bring your lessons to life! Vooks also makes it extremely easy for teachers to locate books they are looking for. It displays books in an organized way, having categories such as NEW RELEASES, POPULAR TITLES, SEASONAL, and CONTINUE WATCHING (my favorite!) which allows the reader to pick up right where they left off. There is also an option to search for books by age range, so students can find just right books!
Vooks is designed for children ages 2-8. However, I have found that many of the stories are perfectly suited for higher grade levels to introduce mini-lessons or review concepts! At the beginning of the school year when students were going over basic writing skills (such as using punctuation correctly) it was the perfect time to pull up “Exclamation Mark” by the award winning author Amy Krouse! I read this book every year, but it wasn’t until the animated pages of Vooks showed the students the punctuation moving all about around the screen that they really understood the importance of using proper punctuation!
It’s comforting to know that Vooks is entirely kid-friendly. Vooks goes to great lengths to ensure that each and every story in their library is suitable for kids. It is also ad-free! Vooks is such a versatile resource, and now is the perfect time to get yourself signed up for FREE.
FALL TITLES
As we enter the last week of October there are many Fall books on Vooks that students would enjoy that I want to share with you. “The Day of the Dead: A Bilingual Celebration”, is a non-fiction look at the beloved traditions of el Dia de los Muertos. Millions of people observe this holiday in remembrance of loved ones who have past on, and this book gives students a deep understanding of why this celebration is so important. There is also “Halloween at the Zoo” which is about animals who are out for a fun-filled night of trick-or-treating at the Zoo! Elephants, hippos, zebras, kangaroos, and more, wear silly costumes as they celebrate Halloween together!
